The Arkansas Wireless Information Network (AWIN) is a statewide, multiple site, digital 700/800 MHz trunked communications system using the Association of Public Safety Communications Officials (APCO) Project 25 (P-25) standard.  APCO P-25 is the industry standard for public safety.  It was developed to allow any manufacturer’s P-25 compliant radios to operate on the system.  AWIN provides statewide operations, within the coverage area of the system, for public service entities using P-25 digital 700/800 MHz radios. This type of system offers the following benefits:

  • The ability to coordinate communications with other agencies or jurisdictions.
  • The ability to purchase radios from more than one vendor.
  • The ability to share resources to enhance communications and control costs.

AWIN serves the State of Arkansas and her people by providing a reliable, statewide means of communication for the state’s first responders.  The AWIN System consists of over 100 tower sites scattered throughout the state.  Three new sites will be integrated into the system sometime in 2012.  There are over 20,000 radios authorized for use on the system.  Every county in the state has access to the system through their county Emergency Managers but most counties have several other authorized users such as the County Sheriff or local police departments.

AWIN is monitored 24 hours a day, 365 days per year to ensure that it is available whenever the first responder needs it.  The AWIN staff is highly trained and dedicated to ensuring the system is available every second of every day.  The Arkansas Interoperable Communications Committee (AICC) and Executive Committee (AICEC) are also committed to making sure the system meets the needs of the state’s first responders while allowing for others to join the system.    The AICEC is the governing body for AWIN and the AICC provides the Executive Committee with the local point of view.
